  • Instructive Modern Chess Masterpieces
A New Edition of a Winner of the USCF Award for Best Book
Igor Stohl has selected 62 outstanding games from recent years and analysed them in painstaking depth. Here he presents his findings to chess enthusiasts, who will find the games entertaining and the annotations both instructive and illuminating. Stohl is an outstanding theoretical expert, so the opening phase of each game reads like a lesson in the key strategic aspects of the opening chosen, with a critical survey of modern trends. The middlegame is dissected and the critical decisions subjected to keen scrutiny - we are invited inside Stohl's laboratory to join him in the quest for the truth. The endgame phase, if reached, is handled with similar erudition, with insights into the grandmaster's approach to questions of technique.

  • 500 English Miniatures
Author Bill Wall presents another in his popular series of miniature games - games completed in 25 moves or less - this time in the English Opening. His compilation includes games involving Grandmasters as well as wood pushers. These collections have proven to be valuable to players who wish to see typical mistakes and how they are punished. But many readers simply find these games very entertaining. Quick victories have always been popular for light reading - the thrust of a quick mating attack or win has a certain attraction. Bill Wall adds light notes to illustrate better lines, or the continuation when an early resignation leaves it not too obvious how material will be lost or mate will follow.

In California, there was the emergence of talented new players and the departures of some old ones. Louis D. Statham (1907–1983) established his famous series of tournaments in Lone Pine, California. Every year it got stronger as grandmasters throughout the world came in increasing numbers and the cash prizes got bigger. It eventually became annually the strongest Swiss System tournament in the world. First winner was Larry Evans who moved to nearby Reno, Nevada.
