The September 2004 Issue of Chess Life Magazine includes "The U.S. Government Checks Fischer in Japan", an article written by Kalev Pehme. It discusses the controversial arrest of Bobby Fischer by the Japanese Government on July 15, 2004. While attempting to board a plane to the Philippines, Bobby Fischer was arrested on charges stemming from his US Passport having been revoked.

This issue also includes comprehensive coverage of the 2004 Women's World Championship and the 2004 St. John's Invitational.

It also includes an article about the 1929 National Chess Federation Championship, which then-World Champion Alexander Alekhine won handily over such players as Frank Marshall, Lajos Steiner and Abraham Kupchik.

  • My System
Aron Nimzowitsch was one of the greatest chess players of the 1920s and 1930s, ranked just behind the famous World Champions Alekhine and Capablanca. His reputation as an author is higher still.

My System is at the top of a very short list of chess classics. Nimzowitsch's ideas have had a profound influence on modern chess thinking. Most chess masters will at some point have studied Nimzowitsch's work, and not to have read My System is by many regarded as a shocking gap in a chess player's education.

  • How to Play Dynamic Chess
Size the Moment and Take Full Advantage of Your Chances!
Chess is fundamentally a dynamic game. Each move changes the situation and the possibilities for both sides. No piece is ever identically as valuable as any other, and their scope changes from move to move. The current generation of supergrandmasters plays unrelentingly dynamic chess, but a great deal of chess literature still deals with chess as if it were a predominantly static game. Much traditional chess teaching is based around rules of thumb that might work well 'on average' or in 'typical' situations, but these rules may not equip players for the specific and sometimes exceptional situations that they face in their games.

Moreover, they have extensive knowledge of chess history and opening theory, as well extraordinary endgame technique and tactical vision. However, having reached such a high level can make it difficult to understand what is lacking in the mind of the amateur.

Attacking the Kings on Opposite Sides
Both players are gunning for each other's kings. Whose attack will break through first? This is a typical scenario in chess games. In such tense battles where one slip can be fatal, often it's a case of 'who dares wins'. But it's not enough to throw your pieces up the board and hope for the best. To succeed you need to acquire sophisticated attacking and defensive skills. The good news is that they can easily be learned, remembered and put into practice.
