The King is represented by Julius Caesar, traditionally dressed in a toga, the distinctive costume that remained fashionable throughout the whole of the Roman period. Caesar had several wives, none of whom played a significant role in Roman history. The queen is dressed in a cloak or palla, with its multiple folds resulting in its extravagant length, typical of the period. The headdress is also traditional, modified from the original Greek.

The standard bearer carrying the insignia of the legion represents the bishop. He wears a generals mantle over the coat of mail with its traditional bronze decorations. The knight is a gallant soldiers horse and the pawns are fighting foot soldiers. The rook takes the form of a Roman column.

  • EBOOK - Garry Kasparov on Modern Chess - VOLUME II
    Kasparov vs. Karpov - 1975-1985
This volume concentrates on the first two of those matches. The epic 1984/85 contest which was lasted six months before being controversially halted "without result" by the then President of FIDE Florencio Campomanes. The 1985 match when Kasparov brilliantly won the final game to take the title and become - at the age of 22 - the youngest ever world champion. Great chess contests have often had resonances extending beyond the 64 squares. • Brain Games World Chess Championship 2000
The Official Inside Story of Vladimir Kramnik's Sensational Match Win Against Garry Kasparov
Grandmaster Ray Keene, chess impresario, broadcaster and writer, has been responsible for organising more world championship matches outside the USSR than any other person in the history of official contests. In 1986 he brought Kasparov and Karpov together and in 1993 Kasparov and Short. Finally, in 2000, after a five year gap with no world title match, Keene raised 2 million dollars to persuade Kasparov to defend his title in London against the rising Russian star Vladimir Kramnik. To almost universal surprise Kramnik toppled Kasparov after his 15 year reign and won with relative ease. He became World Champion without losing a single game, a feat not accomplished since Capablanca defeated Lasker in 1921.

  • Garry Kasparov on My Great Predecessors - VOLUME V
    Korchoi and Karpov
This book, the fifth in Garry Kasparov's magnificent history of the World Chess Championship, catalogues the "post-Fischer" period in the 1970's and early 1980's. This period was dominated by Anatoly Karpov (world champion from 1975-1985) and his three-time challenger, Viktor Korchnoi. Anatoly Karpov gained the right to challenge Bobby Fischer for the world title by winning through the Candidates series in 1974. As is well known, Fischer refused to defend the title and in 1975 Karpov became champion by default. Although he did not have to contest a Championship match to gain the title, Karpov proved that he was a worthy champion by winning virtually every major tournament over the next decade.
