Book Description

Paul Keres — "the greatest player never to have been world champion" — was a legendary figure in chess. The depth of his conceptions and the elegance and beauty of his play rank him among such immortals as Alekhine, Tal, Bronstein, Botvinnik, and Bobby Fischer.

As a chess analyst, Keres had even fewer equals. The first Soviet grandmaster with a regular column in an American chess magazine, his articles for Chess Life between 1968 and 1975 set new standards in chess analysis.

Power Chess contains twenty-two of his best articles. Here are incredible rook sacrifices by Bronstein, ferocious attacks by Tal and Spassky, heroic defenses by Korchnoi, subtle endgames by Petrosian and Karpov, uncompromising struggles by Keres himself — all profoundly analyzed by the greatest annotator who ever lived.

About the Author(s)

Paul Keres was born on January 7, 1916, in Narva, Estonia. He was an Estonian chess grandmaster and one of the strongest chess players of all time, apart from the World chess champions. Many claim him to be the strongest modern player (since the line of official World Champions started with Steinitz in 1886) never to play in a world championship match. He was dubbed "The Crown Prince of Chess".

He won the strong USSR Chess Championship three times (1947, 1950 and 1951), and finished a runner-up in the Candidates Tournament four times, never qualifying for a world championship match. He was one of very few players who had a plus record against Capablanca. Through his long career, he played against no less than ten world champions, beating nine (his games with Karpov were drawn). He was ranked among the top 10 players in the world for close to 30 years, between approximately 1936 and 1965, and overall he had one of the highest winning percentages of all grandmasters in history.

  • Million Dollar Blackjack
Million Dollar Blackjack is the second of several books written by Ken Uston on Blackjack. You may wonder why he needed to write several books on the same subject. Was he like a chess grandmaster who publishes accurate analysis but who holds back a few secrets and sets traps for the unwary reader to fall into should he ever face the grandmaster in a tournament game? Most readers probably assumed that they were playing the system described by Edward Thorp in his book 'Beat the Dealer".

  • The Trompowsky Attack
One of the most dynamic and attacking of all chess openings, the search for new ideas in the Trompowsky has gone beyond the rare and bizarre into the realm of the unorthodox and even bizarre. Somewhere in between lies a widely misunderstood and often mishandled device known as the Trompowsky Attack. Still a relatively young and evolving opening, this really took off in the 1980's and early 90's. This dynamic, attacking system has become a staple in the repertoires of many GM's. Of particular note, England's Julian Hodgson is often credited as the leading innovator of new, fresh Trompowsky ideas

Fierce Openings For Your New Repertoire
Professional grandmasters study the latest wrinkles of their favorite openings. They have time to think about innovations in the Sicilian Najdorf, the Marshall Attack, or the Semi-Slav. It's part of their job. But club players can rarely afford such luxury, and an excellent way for them to beat their busy schedules is to play good, solid opening lines that happen to be out of style.

  • Starting Out - The Trompowsky
The Trompowsky Attack is well known as an ambitious and aggressive opening. Initially an offbeat line favoured by club players, in recent history it has undergone somewhat of a transformation. Thanks to the efforts and innovations of Grandmasters such as Mickey Adams and Julian Hodgson, it has been fine-tuned into a powerful attacking weapon, and today it is seen as an important mainline opening in its own right.
