Five in a Row (Renju) for Beginners to Advanced Players
Renju, as the game is known in Japanese or Lianzhu in Chinese, is a modified and improved version of the ancient game of Five-in-a-Row, also known by its Japanese name of Gomoku. The reason it was necessary to modify the basic game of Five-in-a-Row is that in the traditional game, the player of the first move has such a big advantage that he will win every, or almost every, game.

He promoted a chess set of clearly distinguishable pieces of standardised shape that is still the style which must be used for competitions. He was the principal organizer of the first international chess tournament in 1851. From 1840 onwards he became a leading chess commentator, and won matches against top players of the 1840s. Flank Openings are opening systems first developed by such players as Reti and Nimzowitsch in which the player of the white pieces concedes control of the center to Black, but then seeks to undermine the center and cause it to collapse with attacks from the sides. Grandmaster Raymond Keene explains the concepts and ideas behind these chess opening systems.

Church's Fried Chicken First International Chess Tournament
San Antonio 1972 was either the strongest chess tournament ever played in the history of the United States or, if not the very strongest, then second only to New York 1924. What makes this book especially great is not merely was it a great tournament with great players, but that the players annotated some of their own games. In this day and age, there are millions of games in the chess databases, but annotated games are increasingly hard to find.

    >Francois-Andre Danican Philidor (1726-1795) is widely regarded as the strongest chess player ever in history prior to the modern era. He was so much better than any of his contemporaries that it is impossible for us to know how good he really was. The edition of the book that is reprinted here was published in 1871 by C. Sanson. This shows that the original Philidor book was still the standard work on the subject one hundred years after it was first written.

    Grandmaster Chess
The Book of the Louis D. Statham Lone Pine Masters-Plus Tournament 1975
Lone Pine 1975 was the first ever truly Grandmaster Swiss event. Today, with many grandmaster Swiss events taking place every year, such as the Aeroflot Open, the Reykjavik Open, and many others, not to mention the World Open, bringing together 22 grandmasters to play in a Swiss tournament does not seem that remarkable. Even the title, Grandmaster Chess, seems to be a bit hackneyed with so many grandmaster events being played today.
