Almost all the chess pieces (except for the tricky knights) have the ability to move along straight lines, whether vertically (files), horizontally (ranks) or on the diagonals. These straight lines, which connect different areas of the board and give the pieces the chance to decide the outcome of the battle, are most important in chess, and thus the title - highways. Understanding the abilities of the pieces is absolutely crucial for every player, from beginner to master. In a game of chess you are the general, and the pieces are your soldiers - the better your relationship with your soldiers - the better your results. In his third DVD for ChessBase, GM Dejan Bojkov from Bulgaria gives you an insight into the properties of those pieces which move in straight lines, and tips of how to best exploit the open diagonals, ranks and files to get the maximum out of each piece. In 30 clips you will find out how to better understand your major pieces and exploit the open and half open files; you will learn what their fears are, and how you can help them. The DVD contains at the end a training session to better promote the understanding of the material. It is an invaluable handbook for both chess players and trainers. Video running time: 5 hours 38 min. Dejan Bojkov is a Bulgarian Grandmaster who famously trained Former Women's World Champion Antoaneta Stefanova. An active player, his best results include winning the Bulgarian Championship in 2009 and in 2010 winning the Gronigen Chess Festival. His previous DVDs include the Try the Sicilian Kalashnikov! and A Modern Way to Play the King`s Indian. Chess Highways - Dejan Bojkov
Ever since the Kasparov-Kramnik World Championship Match held in London in 2000, players with the white pieces have been trying to crack the formidable Berlin Wall in the Ruy Lopez. There may also have been some successes for White of course, but time and again Black has convincingly demonstrated how to equalize or even how to construct an impregnable fortress. The situation from White's point of view has become precarious
Beating the Berlin Defense - Alexei Shirov
1.Nf3 - a variable Repertoire for White is the name for a comprehensive opening system strategy based on security and choice. The old maxim of perceiving 1.e4 openings as tactical and more dangerous as opposed to the more positional and peaceful 1.d4 openings no longer reflects the modern world of chess openings. This repertoire DVD is the fruit of a lifetime's experience, as the author Lubomir Ftacnik uses it actively in his practice. The system gives all White players the chance to fine-tune the level of exposure and risk
1. Nf3 - A Variable Repertoire for White - Lubomir Ftacnik
On the ABC of the Classical Dutch, IM Andrew Martin gives the student a thorough grounding in the ways of this unconventional opening. The positions that are reached after 1...f5 are always sharp and unclear, suiting the chessboard warrior very well. You cannot play the Dutch with a faint heart! The ABC of the Classical Dutch will analyse systems where predominantly Black plays with an early ...d7-d6. There are discussions of all the key ideas and opening themes, as well as repertoire suggestions for Black. The Classical Dutch does not enjoy an especially good reputation at the highest level, but from time to time the great players have employed 1...f5 when fighting outright for the win. It would not have been a good idea to tell Alekhine, Botvinnik, Bronstein or Larsen that 1...f5 is a weak move! The world of the Classical Dutch is a rather unusual one. If you are looking for a winning weapon as Black and you are an uncompromising fighter, then this opening is for you! Video running time: 3 hours 45 min. IM Andrew Martin is 54 years old and holds the FIDE Senior Trainer title. Since 2004 he has recorded over 25 DVD's for ChessBase. System requirements: Pentium-Processor at 300 Mhz or higher, 64 MB RAM, Windows 7, Windows XP, Windows Vista, DVD drive, mouse, soundcard.

The ABC of the Classical Dutch - Andrew Martin
Really, among the open games the only opening with which White can really fight for an advantage in the long term is the Ruy Lopez. But in order to make this serious effort, he has buckle down and learn a whole series of sub-variations. That is what the professionals do, including of course Viktor Bologan, who now reveals the secrets of his own grandmaster repertoire. In the first part the top Moldovan player deals with systems in which Black avoids the main continuation 3...a6 on his third move. These include exotic lines such as 3...Nd4, 3...Nge7, 3...g6 and 3...Bc5, which should however not be under-estimated. In 3...f5 (the Schliemann Defence) he examines a system which has even found its way into the repertoire of many a top player. But the most important variation starts with 3...Nf6 and in its main move order leads to the Berlin Wall. Nowadays, anyone who plays the Ruy Lopez must know above all what he is going to play against this modern defence. Video running time: 4 hrs 42 min. WINNING WITH THE RUY LOPEZ - Victor Bologan - VOLUME 1
On his second Ruy Lopez DVD Viktor Bologan shows how things continue after 3...a6 4.Ba4. Black has some possible deviations before we reach the main lines which are dealt with in Part 3. These include the solid Steinitz Defence and the Archangelsk Variation which has again been brought up to date. In the Open Ruy Lopez quite different types of positions are reached - and White need to understand these too. And our author prefers to avoid the Marshall Attack - so he suggests the Anti-Marshall beginning with 8.h3. Video running time: 5 hrs 20 min. But in order to make this serious effort, he has buckle down and learn a whole series of sub-variations. That is what the professionals do, including of course Viktor Bologan, who now reveals the secrets of his own grandmaster repertoire. Black then has a whole host of variations, but the ensuing structures have much in common and if you are equipped with some insider tips you will be able to take the correct decisions which can frequently only be made on a basis of generalised evaluations. Viktor Bologan is an outstanding adviser because when one considers his super score against the Ruy Lopez, he must have excellent knowledge of the ins and outs of this opening, and he does not hold back from sharing this knowledge with you. Opening Repertoire for the Positional Player - Valeri Lilov
For young and developing players a very important piece of advice is to study open positions and to understand the value of coordination of the pieces plus the role of the centre. These goals can be achieved just by answering 1.e4 with 1...e5. Some players claim that these positions are not sharp and interesting enough, and they believe that different Sicilians should be one’s choice, but that is not completely correct. The idea of this DVD is to show that 1.e4 e5 can be extremely entertaining and that Black can obtain interesting counterplay in every opening. There are two lines proposed in the Spanish systems plus the most active alternatives against other white choices. Video running time: 6 h 48 min. TACTICS - From Basics to Brilliance - Valeri Lilov - VOLUME 3
Bologans way to the Nimzo-Indian was very long and difficult. Which he now regrets a lot: “I would better start it when I was young. First I played only the King’s Indian against 1.d4, later I learned Black’s Knights Tango, which already had some elements of the Nimzo-Indian and only in the new millenium I included the Nimzo Indian into my repertoire.” This period coincided with the period of winning the Dortmund 2003 tournament, when he managed to hold with Black against Vladimir Kramnik in the decisive last round in a Nimzo with 4.Qc2. The Moldavian grandmaster recommends the Nimzo-Indian to players of all levels, because it’s complex and simple at the same time. It teaches one very important thing in chess - how to play with the knight against a bishop. The Nimzo- Indian therefore has the same importance as the Ruy Lopez after 1.e4. This DVD is aimed to give Black a clear idea what to do against 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 which is considered the strongest move order by White. Video running time: 4 hours 14 min.
