Really, among the open games the only opening with which White can really fight for an advantage in the long term is the Ruy Lopez. But in order to make this serious effort, he has buckle down and learn a whole series of sub-variations. That is what the professionals do, including of course Viktor Bologan, who now reveals the secrets of his own grandmaster repertoire. For many the Ruy Lopez really only begins after the moves 3...a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Be7 6.Re1 b5 7.Bb3 d6 8.h3 0-0 9.c3 - the starting point for Bologan's third DVD. Black then has a whole host of variations, but the ensuing structures have much in common and if you are equipped with some insider tips you will be able to take the correct decisions which can frequently only be made on a basis of generalised evaluations. Viktor Bologan is an outstanding adviser because when one considers his super score against the Ruy Lopez, he must have excellent knowledge of the ins and outs of this opening, and he does not hold back from sharing this knowledge with you. The Semi-Slav (1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 c6) can arise via various moveorders, has decided World Championships, and is one of Black’s most fascinating replies to 1 d4. The complexity and the many possibilities of the variation have intrigued World Champions and generations of strong players, but amateurs often find the lines too complex to handle.

The Scotch has long been associated with exciting play, although people often doubt it’s positional base. But the opening has evolved from the swashbuckling games of the 19th century to become a sound, but aggressive, alternative to the evergreen Spanish. In his first Fritz-Trainer DVD, Parimarjan Negi looks at the latest revolution in Scotch theory that has completely changed white’s plans, and once again brought back the interest of the world’s elite. Negi presents not only the white strategies in detail but also outlines a dynamic way for Black to counter this latest trend.

The DVD is separated into two parts - the first one provides the main ideas behind the opening, and the second gives the theoretical material.
Try the Sicilian Kalashnikov! - Dejan Bojkov
For young and developing players a very important piece of advice is to study open positions and to understand the value of coordination of the pieces plus the role of the centre. These goals can be achieved just by answering 1.e4 with 1...e5. Some players claim that these positions are not sharp and interesting enough, and they believe that different Sicilians should be one’s choice, but that is not completely correct. The idea of this DVD is to show that 1.e4 e5 can be extremely entertaining and that Black can obtain interesting counterplay in every opening. There are two lines proposed in the Spanish systems plus the most active alternatives against other white choices. Video running time: 6 h 48 min. 1.e4 e5 - An Active Repertoire for Black - Adrian Mikhalchishin
The Najdorf system in the Sicilian Defence has a legendary reputation as a defensive weapon for Black.
MR. KASPAROV - How to Play the Najdorf - VOLUME 1
The Berlin Defence which arises after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 Nf6 4.O-O Nxe4 gives White a hard nut to crack, and the solidity of the line led to its nickname “Berlin Wall”. The mainline 5.d4 in particular leads to positions in which White has had trouble to prove any advantage. On this DVD Latvian top player Alexei Shirov proposes a different approach. He recommends to play 5.Re1 which leads to a symmetrical position that according to Shirov is not boring at all. With a whole range of grandmaster games Shirov shows that White can indeed develop pressure and seize the initiative and that the position is full of subtleties.
How to Crack the Berlin Wall with 5. Re1 - Alexei Shirov
The Grünfeld is a highly dynamic opening in which Black’s position often seems to hang together by a single thread; and yet, this apparently precarious equilibrium appears to be enough to make it entirely viable - up to the highest level.

With the Traxler Variation (4.Ng5 Bc5!?) spearheading their repertoire, any player should look forward to fighting for the initiative against the Two Knights with Black. Back in the 1950s, it was Botvinnik who popularised the Exchange Variation of the Queen’s Gambit Declined. The setup, which involves putting the knight on e2 in combination with castling kingside, was revolutionary at that time. Until then, White had either placed his knight on f3 with the idea of s tarting a minority attack on the queenside, or on e2, where it was normally associated with the intention of castling queenside and preparing a pawn storm against the Black King. K asparov, Botvinnik’s pupil, would soon follow in his mentor’s footsteps, bringing yet further refinements to this flexible system.
