Welcome

Sicilian Defense

The Sicilian Defense, a chess opening that begins with the moves 1. e4 c5, is one of the most popular and highest scoring Black responses to the King's Pawn Opening - 1. e4. With 1... c5, Black asserts control over the critical d4 square and launches an aggressive counter-attack to seize control of the center of the chess board. By choosing to play the Sicilian Defense, Black is willing to offer White both the initiative of the Kingside and an advantage in piece development opportunities in exchange for an advanced Queenside pawn and a spatial advantage that often lead to flank attacks.

Popular Variations of the Sicilian Defense: Najdorf Sicilian, Schveshnikov Sicilian, Scheveningen Sicilian

Practitioners of the Sicilian Defense: Bobby Fischer, Garry Kasparov, Mikhail TalViswanathan Anand, Boris Gelfand and Alexei Shirov

Unlike the Najdorf, the Paulsen provides a safer and more positionally based way of fighting against 1.e4. Black is able to obtain adequate counterplay in all variations without going for a do-or-die type of attack.

    The Complete Kalashnikov
    Catalog Code: B0004EV

If you are looking for a deadly weapon against 1.e4, the Kalashnikov Sicilian could well be your best choice! The Kalashnikov is a special opening were theoretical knowledge plays an important role. It’s in 1834 that the French champion Labourdonnais played 4...e5 for the first time. But the Kalashnikov is a decidedly modern opening. That’s why the opening only started gaining in popularity in the late 1980’s, in particular thanks to the famous Russian grandmaster Evgeny Sveshnikov. Ever since, many top level players have added it to their repertoire: Pavel Tregubov, Alexei Fedorov, Etienne Bacrot, Alexander Moiseenko and Teimour Radjabov. Grandmasters Cornette and Libiszewski always thought that the Kalashnikov, which promises Black dynamic compensation in exchange for the apparent weakness of the d5 square and the backwards d6 pawn, was not well-known enough and that its potential was underestimated.

Now there are over 20,000 examples in the databases. Nevertheless, the opening remains based more on the ideas explained by authors Hodgson and Day than on “theory”.
