Product Description

The next Editor, National Master and chess historian Richard Fauber, wrote and published very good, in-depth articles with less whimsy, but more chess. "A Browne Study" by R.E. Fauber, a Walter Browne bio, was published in the August-September 1980 issue. Another great article by the poet NM Fritzinger, "A Whale's-Eye View of the State Championship or could it be that deep down inside i am a while! - DF" appeared in the February-March 1981 issue: shades of E. E. Cummings! The June-July and August-November issues gave very insightful coverage of the Palo Alto 1981 United States Open Championship. The June-July 1983 issue had R. E. Fauber's regular column, "Our Chess Heritage - The Scrappy Lasker." Romona W. Gordon took over as Editor for the August issue, just in time to cover the Pasadena 1983 United State Open.

Richard Fauber continued to write his historically important column, "Our Chess Heritage." Chess Voice publication faltered with the June-July 1984 issue and didn't resume until April-May 1985 under new Editor Dan McDaniel. It ceased publication completely on August-September 1985. Bobby Fischer had been the dominant American player from the early 1960's through 1975, and even though he had abdicated the throne, the echo of his presence in California continued to fuel interest for his generation. By 1985, the Fischer Generation was aging...and finding it harder to compete in local tournaments with the Post-Fischer Generation. Chess Voice went into chess history with the generation that had created it.
