Akiba Rubinstein was born on 12 December 1882 in Poland. He has long been regarded as the strongest chess player in history who never became world champion. A recent trivia quiz appeared in Chess Life Magazine: Who is the player who defeated Lasker, Capablanca and Alekhine the first time he played each of them.
The answer was of course Akiba Rubinstein.
Rubinstein won five tournaments in a row during the period 1912-1914. There is little doubt that he was the strongest player in the world at that time.
Rubinstein's contribution to chess opening theory has been enormous. Almost every major chess opening has a Rubinstein Variation or a Rubinstein Defense. Think about it: There is no Fischer Defense, no Capablanca Defense. But there are many variations called the Rubinstein Defense or Variation. Only Steinitz has as many openings named after him, but the Steinitz Defenses are no longer played.

This is not merely a great book. It is an important piece of chess history, because the author Hans Kmoch visited the Rubinstein Family Home in 1933 in an effort to get the great grandmaster of chess to return to active play. When Rubinstein could not be induced to return, his family who was living in dire poverty asked Kmoch for help in raising funds. Botvinnik One Hundred Selected Games is a direct translation in Descriptive Notation of a book in Russian published in Leningrad in 1949. Unlike most other cases where the translator takes some liberties, we have not been able to find any differences in the text between this translation and the original in Russian. Mikhail Moiseyevich Botvinnik was born on August 17, 1911. In 1931 at the age of 20 he won his first of six Soviet championships. He won the World Chess Championship in 1948 and held the title with two breaks until 1963. This book covers the most important period of his career from the time he played in his first serious chess event until just before his winning the World Chess Championship in 1948.

In 1971-1974, there was a great increase in chess activity world wide because of the 1972 Fischer Spassky Match in Iceland. In California, there was the emergence of talented new players and the departures of some old ones. Louis D. Statham (1907–1983) established his famous series of tournaments in Lone Pine, California. Every year it got stronger as grandmasters throughout the world came in increasing numbers and the cash prizes got bigger. It eventually became annually the strongest Swiss System tournament in the world. First winner was Larry Evans who moved to nearby Reno, Nevada.

This is the last volume of California Chess Reporter and it contains the last issue of this publication, May-June 1976 issue. The last issue explains the reason why the publication was closing down. At the 1976 Delegates meeting of the US Chess Federation, a motion had been made to split the state of California in two for chess purposes. This had passed without significant debate or opposition. Similar motions had often been made at meetings of the California State Chess Federation and had repeatedly been voted down. The USCF Delegates seemingly knew nothing about this; it seems that nobody from Northern California was on-hand to explain the consequences of their proposed action
