Attention is given to all the components that make up chess strategy, so that at the end a player will be better able to make good moves and good plans. As usual, recent master games are the focus for the investigation and a database will be provided of all games used. All of these games have detailed notes and can be studied independently by the student at leisure.

Andrew Martin is 53 years old and is the Manger of Coaching for the English Chess Federation. He is a Senior FIDE Trainer and International Master.

    • The True Value of Pieces - Dejan Bojkov
      Strategy
Queen against two rooks or three minor pieces, as well as a rook plus pawn vs two minor pieces - these are typical constellations where the material is unbalanced. In our first steps in chess we are taught about the nominal value of the pieces. The queen is equal to nine pawns; a rook to five, a minor piece is worth three pawns. This is a common sense solution aimed at teaching the beginner a system of values so that he or she does not trade a more valuable piece for a less good one. Later however, situations occur in games in which one side can trade two minor pieces (six pawns) for a rook and a pawn (also six pawns). Theoretically speaking, this should result in an equal position, but in reality one of the two sides will profit from the exchange.

    • Starting Out - Attacking Play
How to Set Up And Executive Decisive Attacks
Attacking the opponent's king is one of the most exhilarating aspects of chess, but also one of the most difficult to master. Everyone loves a good old-fashioned king hunt, especially when it leads to checkmate, but often the pressure is very much on the aggressor-one false move and the attack can often fizzle out into less than nothing, leaving the attacker with an empty shell of a position.
