"In its continuing effort to resurrect a lost art, we proudly offer an exact reproduction of the St. George Chessmen, arguably the most famous of the Pre-Staunton Chessmen that dominated the Chess world in the early 1800s."

Before the Staunton chessmen arrived on the scene in October of 1849, tournament and cafe chess play was dominated by what are now known as English Pattern chessmen. Variations of that design were legion. Out of that group came the beautiful Lund chessmen, produced by Thomas Lund and William Lund in the early 1800s. Perhaps the most famous variation on the English pattern was the Saint George Chessmen. The set is alleged to have been designed for the Saint George Chess Club, one of London's best known clubs which was often frequented by Howard Staunton and other strong English players. One feature which helped the popularity of these chessmen was the introduction of lead weights to help stabilize the chessmen during play. The firm of John Jaques of London first introduced their system of weighting chessmen when they introduced their revolutionary Staunton Chessmen in 1849.In its continuing effort to resurrect a lost art, The House of Staunton?, Inc. has produced an accurate recreation of the original Saint George Chessmen produced by the firm of John Jaques of London.
