The Blackburne Series Chess Luxury Pieces - 4.4" King

    Product Code: MENWBLK44

    Description

The House of Staunton is proud to offer the Blackburn Series Luxury Chess set. A full tournament-sized Chess set, it features a 4.4" King with a 2" diameter base. The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade woods. The Chess pieces are heavily weighted with luxurious black Frank Camaratta embossed black leather. The other chess pieces have brilliant billiard cloth and a beautiful finish. The design of the Blackburn Series Chess set captures the exquisite design and proportions of the Staunton Chess Sets produced during the 1920s, which is widely regarded as the Golden Age of Chess The distinctive features of this set are its slender, elegant form and its superbly carved Knight design. The Blackburn Series Chess set is ideal for those that are interested in an heirloom quality Chess set that follows classical Staunton proportions, but at the same time has a very elegant and distinctive appearance.

As with all of our Chess sets, the Blackburn Series exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. It has been designed to withstand the rigors of practical play while maintaining an elegance which has become the hallmark of a House of Staunton chess set. The design, quality and craftsmanship of this set is UNMATCHED by any set of Chessmen in its price range. Nothing even comes close!

The Chessmen are new and each set consists of 34 Chessmen, including four Queens, a standard that was introduced by The House of Staunton in 1993.

    History of the Chess Pieces

Joseph Henry Blackburne (10 December 1841 – 1 September 1924), nicknamed “The Black Death“, dominated British chess during the latter part of the 19th century. He learned the game at the relatively late age of 17 or 18, but he quickly became a strong player and went on to develop a professional chess career that spanned over 50 years. At one point he was the world’s second most successful player, with a string of tournament victories behind him, and popularized chess by giving simultaneous and blindfold displays around the country. Blackburne also published a collection of his own games.

The following account was published in Man of the Day. Number CCCCIIII, First published June 2, 1888. Buy APE, Carlo Pellegrini.

“Joseph Henry Blackburne was born in Manchester rather more than five and 40 years ago. There was nothing phenomenal about his infancy, and he was well on in his young manhood when he first saw a chessboard. But he had been a precocious player at Draughts, and when Morphy, the blindfold chess player, went to Manchester in 1860, young Blackburn saw, wondered at, and envied him. Fourth with, he taught himself to learn the moves, and, in nine or 10 months from that time, he played with, and beat, one Pinder, the provincial champion, winning game after game from him – a good deal to his own surprise, and a good deal more to the surprise of Pinder. Not long after this he played 10 opponents blindfold, and won nearly all his games. He was then invited to play at the British Chess Congress in London in 1862, where he was pitted against the foremost players in Europe. Five years later, he became champion of Great Britain, checkmating 11 competitors from all parts of the Kingdom. Since then, he has held his own in every international tournament, at home and abroad; and 70 years ago he out Blackburned Blackburn by taking first prize in the Grand International Tourney at Berlin, defeating Zukertort, Mason, Paulsen, Winnower, Tschigorin, and nearly every other European player of the first rank.

It is, however, as a blindfold player that he is most renowned, and in this capacity, is without a rival in the world. At one time he played as many as 15 games simultaneously, with his back to the board, but he now generally restricts himself to seven or eight. Playing under the ordinary conditions, he is capable of engaging at one time and the same time as many opponents as would line both sides of Oxford Street. With all this, he is the quietest and most unassuming of men. Everyone who knows him likes him, and no one ever said and unkind word of him. While at the board his diet is coffee and tobacco: and he takes a little whiskey before going to bed.”
