Dewain Barber has been involved in scholastic chess for over 50 years. This involvement has not only been in California, but all across the United States and several other countries.

In 2019 Dewain enlisted Ralph Bowman in one more effort to help scholastic chess by coming up with a collection of humorous stories on the subject of chess. The entire purpose of these books was to provide additional financial support forscholarships for the National Invitational Scholastic Chess Tournaments.
Dewain and Ralph sent out a call to their many friends in the chess community and 58 chess people responded by submitting 184 stories for Humor In Chess. However, Dewain and Ralph knew there were more stories out there so they sent out the call for more stories. This time 59 chess people submitted 299 stories, cartoon, poem, riddles and jokes for this book, Humor In Chess II.
