This opening is especially well suited for rapid and blitz games, since in the reduced time control in particular the role of the initiative increases. Generally speaking, not in every opening will you find such a thing as Black having the initiative from the very first moves (although this pleasure is paid for with a whole pawn!). I played this opening with a classical time control against the ex-champion of Russia, Grandmaster Igor Lysyj, and very comfortably equalized in the opening, although later the class difference showed and my eminent opponent beat me. Nevertheless, the opening had absolutely nothing to do with it. This opening worked great when I played it in Rostov-on-Don, when I beat many strong players and after that they preferred to play 1.c4, doing whatever they could to avoid the Benko Gambit. Of course, to my understanding this opening is especially good to play against amateurs, or weaker players than yourself, who do not know its intricacies – you can quickly get a promising position. This opening is suitable for active players striving for a lively, initiative-rich game, with a strong spirit. After all, you need to understand that if something goes wrong, you may face big problems, since you do not have a pawn, but as in any opening there are pluses and minuses, and in the Benko Gambit there are also disadvantages. First of all, in some places you need to play very accurately (this will be especially evident in the positions that we will consider in volume 2) and the cost of an error is quite high. But if the reader carefully studies the books, then I think that there should be no problems and the Benko Gambit will give you many of your most interesting fights!

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0953/5809/1556/files/KV9ddzj-zdFrVduWYlNJ_AXeAxn23Id8LmbuHWAkFic.jpg?v=1762108125
the-most-exciting-chess-games-ever
CLEARANCE - The Most Exciting Chess Games Ever

Twenty years ago New in Chess magazine introduced a back page column in which a chess personality is asked to name their favorite items in many areas: food, drink, films, art, music, etc. One of the questions has always been: What is the most exciting game of chess you ever saw?

After dozens of such questionnaires, a large body of games was nominated by chess greats such as Anand, Shirov, Short, and Ivanchuk and chess aficionados such as Jeremy Silman, Jennifer Shahade, and Tania Sachdev. The fact that it was published over 80 years ago has diminished neither its relevance nor significance in today's modern chess world. Lasker was both a wonderful fighter and a deep thinker; his book is the quintessence of the exceptionally succesfull experiences he had over many long years, and his thoughts about them. He teaches what he himself considers most important: general principles and methods applicable to any situation. Once you have read his manual, you will become smarter - afterwards, this is bound to help you, both in chess and in life. This 21st-century edition has been supplemented with dozens of archival photographs of Lasker and his contempories. In addition, an entertaining and instructive feature, "Lasker Lore", highlights the chess history and trivia of the Lasker era. I have played the Ruy Lopez for many years with both colors and believed that I have good knowledge about this opening. I thought that armed with my knowledge I could easily write a book about it. Nothing could be further from the truth! While writing this book, I discovered that the number of resources and lines that Black has here is astonishing. To provide very good material that would satisfy not only the reader, but also myself, I decided to cover the entire opening in two volumes.

The first volume includes three parts. The first part is about Black’s alternatives to the modern major lines. Even though they are not as frequent as lines that I cover in subsequent chapters or volumes, I believe that it is good to know what to do in less popular variations too. After all, why would we study only (say) the Berlin Defense, leaving our opponents able to surprise us with the sharp Schliemann Variation? From a practical point of view, such a line would be very hard to face over the board from both chess and psychological perspectives. Basic knowledge of sidelines is therefore important.

The second part I devote to the extremely solid Berlin Defense. The amount of theory in this opening has grown exponentially in recent years, as basically all the top players go for it with at least one color. I will try to shed some light on this complex line and try to show different ways in which White can try to get an advantage out of the opening.

Finally, in the third part I discuss the Open Ruy Lopez. Similarly to the Berlin, the theory has developed immensely here in recent years. I will try to show some interesting lines and ideas that challenge this opening.

I would like to note one thing. Chess is a game where, with perfect play, Black should be always able to equalize. However, equal positions do not mean that the game should end in a draw. In many lines (especially in the Berlin), the positions are simply equal if Black does everything correctly. There is no way to prevent that. However, I aim to show lines that can possibly create practical problems for your opponents. Very often the objective evaluation does not really matter if a player knows what he or she is doing while his or her opponent does not. Having a clear idea about the plans and where to put one’s pieces, as well as a general “feeling” for the position, is way better than knowing that 0.23 is shown by an engine and not having any idea what to do next. And this is the primary goal of this book – to provide to the reader various ideas in the Ruy Lopez that could be used to the reader’s advantage in practical games. This would increase the chances of opponents making mistakes (by driving them out of their comfort zone) and therefore also your winning chances.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0953/5809/1556/files/Zdio54DYVy8vXTEXwIPxLcqpZ0zp1A6IbVhsyr3IDmQ.jpg?v=1762116074
clearance-the-richter-rauzer-reborn-the-kozul-variation
CLEARANCE - The Richter-Rauzer Reborn - The Kozul Variation

The Richter-Rauzer is one of the most complex and rich battlegrounds in the Open Sicilian. Emanuel Lasker, the second and longest reigning World Chess Champion (27 years!), understood that what a club player needs most of all is common sense: understanding a set of timeless principles. It enables every post-beginner to play trustworthy openings, reach a sound middlegame and have a basic grasp of endgame technique. Welling and Giddins explain the principles with very carefully selected examples, some of them from Lasker’s own games.

The Lasker Method to Improve in Chess is an efficient toolkit as well as an entertaining guide. A full tournament-sized Chess set, it features a 3.75" King with a 1.625" diameter base. The Chess pieces are hand carved by our master artisans and crafted out of the highest grade woods. The Chess pieces are heavily weighted with luxurious billiard cloth base pads and a glossy finish to future accentuate the details.

The design of the Fischer Spassky 1972 Commemorative Chess Set is an exact reproduction of the Chess set used by the legendary American Grandmaster Bobby Fischer when he won the 1972 World Chess Championship against the reigning World Champion Grandmaster Boris Spassky in Reykjavik, Iceland. The Chess set has been designed to withstand years of use (and abuse), as it lacks many of the ornate details commonly found on Chess Sets that can be susceptible to damage in the heat of battle. For example, the Chess set features reinforced Pawn collars and oversized Rook ramparts for unmatched durability. This chess set is ideal for those that are interested in both the historical importance of the game of Chess, as well as those looking for an attractive Chess set that is both economical and durable.

As with all of our Chess sets, the Fischer Spassky 1972 Commemorative Chessmen exemplifies a perfect combination of distinct beauty and functionality. One memorable incident of which I am proud took place when I was just 13 years old. I was deeply intrigued by the game Karjakin- Anand, Wijk 2006. In this game Vishy unleashed a fascinating novelty with 24…Nc7. Upon seeing this I simply could not sleep and began to analyze the razor-sharp English Attack for hours and hours. During this time, I developed pages and pages of notes and found some interesting ideas. During my next training session with world renowned trainer GM RB Ramesh I showed him 20 pages of analysis from the notes I had developed. GM Ramesh was simply stunned! At that time, it was not normal for a 13 year old to develop such work. Of course, now days it is a different story as many players become Grandmasters by the age of 13! As a result of this work I was tagged as an opening expert in India among my fellow Grandmasters! I was extremely happy to be asked to share some of my work with the readers, but I was concerned about the time necessary to complete such a task. As an ambitious tournament player, I had several events on my schedule and was concerned about being able to complete the task. My concerns were put to rest by Mr. Daniel Vanheirzeele who is a passionate chess lover but also a businessman who understands both chess and the book business. He had it all: talent, skill and motivation. After winning many junior and student tournaments, he went on to play in fourteen Soviet championships at a time when these were considered some of the most powerful competitions in the world. You are now invited to join the author in a very personal autobiographical journey, as he traces his development from one of many gifted chessplaying children to a powerful international grandmaster, a member of the world's chess elite. For Tukmakov, chess was more than just a hobby or passion ― it was his profession. From talented boy and strong grandmaster to twice leading the Ukrainian team to gold medals in the 2004 and 2010 Olympiads, Tukmakov's story is a fascinating glimpse into the "golden era" of the Soviet School of Chess, and the trials and tribulations of individual will and genius.
