History of the Chess Pieces
Founded in 1914, the Drueke Company was America's oldest manufacturer of traditional board games. One of it's most sought after products by Chess Collectors, the Players Choice Chessmen were first introduced to the public at the 1965 US National Open in Las Vegas. It was well received at the event, with every set available for sale having been sold. The Drueke Players Choice has two unique charactertistics that made it very popular with chess players
* It featured a wholly original design, one that is both attractive and very sturdy. The chess pieces lacked the ornate details that would often be broken during regular usage.
* They were marketed as a "Simulated Wood Chessmen"; The plastic used to produce the Players Choice was colored to give the appearanceof real wood.
Sales of Drueke Chess products peaked during the Fischer Boom, when Bobby Fischer was frequently photographed practicing with his own set of Drueke chess pieces.
In 2010, the Drueke Company was sold to the Carrom Company and all but two of its products were discontinued.
