What is a Digital Chess Board?

Digital Chess Boards are electronically enabled, so they can connect to the many digital resources, platforms, and technologies of modern chess.

There are many different types with different capabilities. Some have a built-in chess engine or computer that can detect and suggest moves on the board via LED lights, a small screen, or a connected device. Others can also connect to other devices and access downloaded or online chess programs and platforms. This means access to chess computers and programs, databases, engines, online chess platforms, and analysis boards.

Some digital chess boards are also expanding gameplay's interactive capabilities. In some innovative examples, the chess pieces even move themselves.

Digital Chess Board Examples

Digital chess boards vary in a lot of ways. Their size, functionality, connectivity, battery life, how they recognize pieces, and how they signal moves all depend on the model.

These are a few examples for you to look at. This will give you a sense of how their different capabilities can enhance gameplay and open up new avenues in the game.

Over-the-Board Practice

As we’ve seen, one of the things that e-boards offer is the ability to play online games on a 3-dimensional chessboard.

What people sometimes forget is how different over-the-board chess is from the computerized version of the game. The way we see the board, visualize future positions, and even calculate are affected by the angle from which we view the chess set. The upshot is that trying to improve at in-person chess or prepare for an over-the-board tournament by playing only online or computer chess is not the most effective route.

One solution is doing it the old-fashioned way: Finding as many over-the-board opponents as you can, playing against yourself, and analyzing with a physical chess set. The alternative? Digital chess boards.

Fundamentally, eboards give you the opportunity to play as much as you like against similarly-rated opponents over the board. The result is that you have all of the benefits of in-person play and develop the right visualization, board awareness, and calculation skills. All of this comes with the simplicity and accessibility of online play.

Engine Play, Analysis, and Databases

Today, chess training often means using an engine for practice, analysis, and learning openings and endgames. Engines allow you to alter the level and playing style of your opponent. This accessibility to strong competition and a variety of openings and strategies is crucial.

Game analysis is one of the most crucial parts of improving at chess. By exploring different variations, looking at weaknesses in your openings, and identifying key moments in the game, you can see how to improve.

The Chess.com has a free analysis board that allows you to analyze positions like this.

With a digital chess board, all of this becomes easier and more practical. One key to this is that games you play on the board can be stored as PGN, allowing you to return and analyse them. You can also connect eboards to online analysis platforms, so you can explore different moves and lines on the board with the whole set of analysis tools. This also gives you access to databases of other games and opening books, so you can easily set up any position on your board and analyze or play it.

Again, this is a way that digital chess boards can enhance gameplay and chess improvement. The modern capabilities of chess engines and online platforms that grandmasters use every day with the physicality of a chessboard are a hugely effective combination.

Enhance Online Play

Playing online chess is accessible, fun, and super competitive. The downside? Staring at a screen and clicking a mouse for potentially hours a day.

Digital chess boards allow you to bring your games back into the 3D world. Not only is it better for preparing for tournaments, but it is also more engaging and less likely to give you a headache. Physically moving the pieces around the board while still having the pressure of a real human opponent is simply a more exciting and interesting way to play chess online.

This is true for playing in online tournaments, random match-ups, and against friends you can’t play with in-person. In short, digital chess boards can revolutionize the way you play online.

Picking the Right Digital Chess Board

If you’re convinced that a digital chess board is worth the expense, then the next step is picking one that works for you. Consider some of the functions and enhancements we’ve looked at. Which would be most important to you?

If you're preparing for a classical tournament, speed may be less important than analysis and game storage. But if you want to play blitz online, then you’ll need real-time scanning technology with natural piece movement. Whatever the case, there are plenty of options to choose from.
