There’s a lot of chatter these days about how the youngest generation is faring. Some think they’re doomed by the ready availability of AI and screens. I tend to be on the optimistic side when thinking about GenZ and Gen Alpha. They may be a little brainrotted from YouTube Shorts, but many also embrace smart hobbies like chess. Can chess save the children? Based on my research, it'll help, and it certainly won't hurt.

Cognitive Development: How Children Learn to Think

Human brains experience most of their volume growth (the “gray matter”) before the age of six years old. The brain continues to build connections for years, however, peaking sometime in the late 20s. These connections are the nerve pathways that carry electrical signals in the brain.

Because brain architecture is built from the bottom up, from simple circuits to more complex ones layered over the originals, it’s important to build a strong foundation. Genes, environment, and experiences all affect brain growth. Because their brains are rapidly growing and developing, children have a high degree of neural plasticity—the ability to shape how the brain functions by building and pruning connections.

The branching nerves, called dendrites, will continue to multiply into the 20s, creating more complex and abstract thought pathways. Think of it like air-dry clay—it remains workable for an extended time but eventually sets in one shape. The activities and experiences children are exposed to, along with genetics, determine the eventual shape of the pathways and number of connections.

This process is additive. Children build foundational skills early through their senses and concrete observation. As they master these milestones, they begin to use logic and reason, eventually moving toward abstract and predictive thinking. Strong evidence shows that young kids benefit more when they combine types of learning. For example, in an alphabet game where kids stand on the letters, they will “stick” faster and more effectively than with worksheets.

A Key Building Block

Another key building block of brain architecture is interaction with caregivers. Reciprocal serve-and-return interactions are essential. One example of this kind of interaction is the classic game Peek-a-boo, where you hide your face and pop out to surprise the child, waiting from them to react or laugh. Children who don’t have these kinds of interactions regularly may miss cognitive milestones because their brains develop more slowly. Playing with your kids is an important ingredient!

How Chess Relates to Cognitive Development

Scientists have studied chess instruction and its effect on cognitive development for a long time. While there isn’t an official consensus, many studies show that regular chess instruction of about an hour a week is convincingly linked to modest gains in cognitive measures, especially in math and overall reasoning/logic. This is because the neural pathways chess strengthens (memory, focus, pattern recognition) are the same ones these tasks use.

Frequent chess practice can also strengthen problem-solving skills and decision-making. Chess games require many decisions under pressure. Children who make many small decisions this way build confidence and strengthen the brain centers that analyze and solve problems.

Playing games with your children is a great way to interact. Using these skills in an activity like chess or sports builds resilience for life.

Another surprising finding in research on chess is the effect regular play has on children and adults with ADHD. In a pilot study in Madrid, Spain, researchers enrolled 44 children with ADHD in an 11-week chess training program. After the program, parents reported a significant (30%) reduction in ADHD symptoms in about half the kids. This is a huge improvement. Chess is inexpensive and has no side effects compared to other therapeutic interventions. Chess isn’t a “cure” for ADHD, but as part of a comprehensive treatment plan, it seems it can help train the brain for better focus, concentration, and executive function.

Starting a Chess Habit

You can start chess as soon as your child shows interest. Many chess players remember seeing a board set up or watching adults play as the catalyst for their chess obsession. How you start can vary by your child's age.

Very young kids (3-5) may not be ready to remember all the rules or play full games. If your chess kid masters the basics quickly and wants more, keep going! Many chess schools offer programs for kids as young as five, around the age most kids start kindergarten. Ages five to seven are the golden window for starting chess with kids. Their neural plasticity is very high, and they’re starting to grow into their logical reasoning skills. Kids this age are able to learn and remember the rules quickly.
